CERN operates one of the world’s largest particle accelerators: the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Several industrial sites are involved in powering and operating this major scientific infrastructure. In this context, conducting an industrial site noise impact study was essential to assess the noise effects on the surrounding environment.
These large-scale sites comprise numerous technical buildings and a variety of equipment (cooling units, ventilation systems, transformers, etc.), generating continuous or intermittent noise emissions. The main challenge was to take into account the cumulative effect of multiple sources, operating at different speeds, in close proximity to residential areas.
It was necessary to ensure regulatory compliance in terms of industrial noise while providing a controlled noise environment for local residents.
We conducted a full environmental acoustic study at several industrial sites that contribute to powering part of the LHC.
Our work began with on-site acoustic measurements to precisely characterise the emissions from the various pieces of equipment. Each source was analysed to determine its acoustic power levels and operating conditions.
We then integrated all the data collected into an acoustic simulation model using CadnaA, enabling us to accurately represent sound propagation across very large sites. This advanced modelling took into account topography, existing buildings, screening effects and operating scenarios.
Our environmental acoustic modelling enabled us to precisely identify the contribution of each piece of equipment and assess the overall impact of the installations on neighbouring areas.
The study provided the client with a clear, quantified overview of noise levels at property boundaries and at the nearest houses. It enabled us to verify regulatory compliance and, where required, recommend the necessary corrective measures.
Thanks to our expertise in complex industrial noise and CadnaA simulation, CERN was able to secure its project in terms of environmental issues and demonstrate rigorous management of its noise impact.
The client was particularly satisfied with the accuracy of the analyses and the clarity of the recommendations provided, confirming the added value of a structured acoustic approach at large-scale industrial sites.
