Building Better Cities Means Designing for Every Human Experience

Cities across Western China are entering a new phase of transformation. Urban renewal, cultural destinations, mixed use developments and public spaces are reshaping the way people live, work and connect. Alongside sustainability and innovation, quality of life has become an increasingly important part of the conversation. These themes were at the heart of the French Architecture Days mission in Chengdu and Chongqing, organized by Business France as part of the France China Architecture and Design Industry Exchange. Representing Delhom Acoustics, Founder and CEO Jean-Philippe Delhom and China Agency Director Liming Lou joined a delegation of leading French architecture, engineering and construction companies for four days of conferences, meetings and site visits. Beyond the scale of the projects presented, one message stood out. Tomorrow’s cities will not simply be defined by what they build, but by the quality of the environments they create.

Why Acoustic Design Belongs at the Start

For Delhom Acoustics, acoustic engineering plays an important role in that vision. Acoustic quality is still too often introduced after the main design decisions have already been made, yet sound shapes the way people experience buildings, workplaces, cultural venues and public spaces, influencing comfort, communication, wellbeing and everyday life. As the only specialist acoustic consultancy within the French delegation, Delhom Acoustics contributed to discussions on how acoustics can be integrated much earlier in the design process, alongside architecture, engineering and urban planning. Considering sound from the outset helps create environments that perform better, not only technically but also for the people who use them every day.

The mission also reflected Delhom Acoustics’ long standing commitment to China. With more than a decade of local presence, the company combines international expertise with an in depth understanding of the Chinese market, working alongside architects, engineers, developers and public authorities on projects across the country. More than a series of meetings, the French Architecture Days demonstrated the value of dialogue across disciplines and cultures, with the pleasure of meeting local government authorities, leading design institutes and major players in the construction sector. As cities continue to evolve, collaboration will remain essential to creating places that are more sustainable, more resilient and ultimately better to experience.
