Designing acoustics for ships presents a very specific set of challenges. For ODC Marine’s 12-meter hybrid boat “Le Pass’Partout,” the goal was to deliver a quiet cruise experience — even while operating at full capacity and cruising speed. That meant controlling machinery noise in a compact and constantly vibrating environment. With no room for error, every decibel mattered. The acoustic design had to ensure a smooth passenger experience without compromising on performance, safety, or the clean energy goals of this 100% electric and hybrid vessel.

Our mission was to support ODC Marine with expert guidance on shipboard noise control, from design through construction. Working hand-in-hand with their team in Shanghai, our acoustic engineers focused on reducing engine and equipment noise levels inside the passenger lounge. We ran detailed acoustic simulations and advised on technical solutions to limit sound transmission and vibration on board. Our goal was to reach a target of around 70 dB(A) — equivalent to the interior noise of a car at highway speed — even while the boat was cruising at full capacity.

“Le Pass’Partout” now delivers a truly silent cruise. The acoustic levels achieved — just around 70 dB(A) while at cruising speed — provide remarkable acoustic comfort for passengers and crew alike. Conversations in the lounge remain easy and uninterrupted, and the atmosphere is noticeably calmer than what’s typically found on passenger vessels. Our continued collaboration with ODC Marine reflects our shared commitment to raising onboard wellbeing, and to pushing the boundaries of acoustic excellence in modern sustainable shipbuilding.
