The Western Academy of Beijing (WAB) aimed to create a central atrium and canteen that would serve as the heart of the school, hosting dining, assemblies, learning activities, and informal gatherings. However, the double-height volume, glazed facades, and hard surfaces led to excessive reverberation, making the space uncomfortable and communication difficult during peak hours.
The school needed effective canteen sound control and educational building noise reduction without compromising the space’s open and inviting atmosphere.
We conducted a diagnostic study focused on acoustics for school atriums, using ray tracing simulations to assess the sound behaviour of the space. We proposed targeted noise control strategies, integrating custom ceiling panels, some shaped like birds, appreciated by both students and teachers, to improve acoustic conditions while respecting the architectural design.
In collaboration with anySCALE, we ensured acoustic comfort through discreet treatments that blended into the space’s lighting and finishes. The solution provided effective canteen sound control while supporting a dynamic and functional learning environment.
The atrium now functions as a welcoming, high-volume space with restored acoustic comfort, supporting conversation, teaching, and social use. Speech clarity has been significantly improved, and the environment remains pleasant even at full capacity.
Delhom’s intervention delivered clear acoustic performance gains aligned with WAB’s values.
“Acoustics is a part of each student’s invisible comfort… a game-changer that should be implemented at the very beginning of every project.”
— Angela, former principal of WAB
