Designed to be more than a performance hall, L’ESCALE set out to become a versatile and acoustically refined cultural venue. With its modular auditorium hosting a wide variety of events throughout the year, the main challenge was to deliver consistent sound quality, audience immersion, and effective control of external noise.
The flexible configuration of the room posed specific constraints: acoustic performance had to remain uncompromised across all layouts, while all treatments had to blend seamlessly into the architectural identity.
We developed a multi-layered acoustic strategy tailored to L’ESCALE’s modular architecture and diverse programming. Through predictive simulations, we optimized the room’s acoustic response for varied performance configurations.
We implemented diffusive wall treatments, targeted absorption, and adjustable acoustic features to control reverberation, support performer feedback, and ensure excellent sound projection.
All solutions were discreetly integrated into the venue’s architecture to maintain harmony between acoustic performance and visual design.
Since its opening in 2012, L’ESCALE has become a cultural reference in the Toulouse region, acclaimed for its acoustic excellence. Both artists and audiences praise the clarity and richness of sound across all types of events.
After the project, Delhom Acoustics collaborated with the Toulouse Chamber Orchestra on an experimental study exploring how audiences perceive sound quality in performance spaces. Using ambisonic recordings and blind testing, L’ESCALE was voted the venue with the best acoustic experience, a result that speaks for itself.
